Older iPhones bring in major payments online

Although most mobile phones tend to depreciate in value fairly quickly, making it sensible to recycle your old handset soon after you have upgraded rather than procrastinating, it seems that the opposite is true with very old iPhones.
The original iPhone launched back in 2007 and was a revolutionary device at the time, thanks to its touch screen interface and powerful processor. But without 3G connectivity, it was a little limited in terms of mobile web access, making its successors a little more appealing from a practical point of view.
However, the Daily Mail reports that a quick search of online auction site, eBay, reveals that the first iPhone has become a bit of a collectors' item, with some models selling for well over £1,000.
This is the kind of price that people are asking for an unopened version of the original iPhone, while used models are a little more affordable, with prices ranging from £40 to £200.
This is still impressive for such an old, outdated handset and reveals just how quickly something can become retro shortly after it has been released in the fast paced world of mobile technology.
Of course, whether or not the original iPhone is actually worth the values being placed on it by eBay sellers, is another matter. It will also be interesting to see whether other early smartphones come back into favour, with value returning to them.
A quick search for the Nokia N95 on eBay reveals that there are still some people eager to own this once world-beating smartphone, with prices hovering around the £50 mark.
A retro smartphone is as much of a fashion statement as it is a nostalgia trip, but for most people, it is much easier to sell an old phone to a recycling company, rather than try and keep all the bits together in the hope that one day it will be worth much more.
