O2 forges deal with mobile recycling company

Mobile recycling firm, Redeem, has just announced a new three year agreement with network provider O2, to recycle old mobile phones, according to the Telegraph.
O2 operates one of the nation’s largest recycling schemes and over the course of 2014, managed to pay back its customers £30 million after they sold their old phones when they upgraded. This was a 20 per cent increase on the amount generated by recycling in 2013, and accounts for this company alone, meaning the market in the UK is much bigger.
Only the US and Canada are more prolific recyclers of mobile phones than the UK, which shows the extent to which British users have embraced the need to dispose of their unwanted devices responsibly, while also getting something in return.
O2 and Redeem will continue to work together, with smartphones being a particularly popular recycling option today, due to the demand for them in emerging markets. Many of the old devices sold by UK users are refurbished and then resold elsewhere in the world, rather than being dismantled for scrap.
Redeem is based in Scotland, but has experienced rapid expansion in recent years, thanks to the international boom in mobile phone recycling. It has a presence in 23 different nations and is continuing to grow, thanks to deals like this one forged with O2.
There are, of course, a number of competing companies operating in the mobile recycling industry at the moment. And the expanding popularity of this practice in the UK means that users have the opportunity to compare offers and find the best deal when they sell their old phones online.
Being a world leader in mobile recycling is important today since it sets in motion the good habits of coming generations, when technology will be even more important and ubiquitous.
