O2 achieves mobile recycling goal

A new mobile phone recycling world record has been set by UK network provider, O2, for the most handsets recycled in a single seven day period.
The previous record was set at 6,130 mobiles, which may seem like a lot, but O2 got its act together and collected 10,310 handsets as part of its successful attempt to enter the record books.
Almost £30,000 was raised as part of the initiative and this money will be given to the provider's own Think Big projects, which are small charitable services run by young people from around the UK.
O2 has been handing out cash for old phones for some time now and the running total of £20 million has been paid back to customers who recognise the benefits of parting with their unwanted handset.
O2 spokesperson, Bill Eyres, said that the record attempt was not purely motivated by promotional benefits but also because the company wants to increase awareness about the availability of mobile recycling services and the environmental impact which improper disposal can have.
Mr Eyres also said that the record success had allowed O2 to show consumers that they can pass on their unwanted mobiles to raise money for charity if they want to do something altruistic with an old model when they upgrade.
O2 has been campaigning to get its Think Big schemes recognised across the UK. It essentially gives grants to youngsters aged between 13 and 25 years, allowing them to develop a project in their local community which will be of benefit to the wider population.
After school homework clubs and schemes to get kids involved in politics have already received cash as part of the Think Big campaign and now recycled mobiles will be adding to the pot of available funds.
