Nottinghamshire police create smartphone crime taskforce

Mobile phone theft has been a persistent issue in the UK ever since portable handsets gained widespread popularity, but with modern smartphones there are many more reasons to keep your handset safe.
With the access to personal information provided through high end handsets, criminals can get away with a lot more than just your precious device, if they manage to wrangle it from your possession.
Gangs have also been exploiting mobile phone recycling services, to try and launder stolen handsets in recent years, rather than selling them on to new owners directly.
But a new team which has been formed by Notts Police is looking to tackle smartphone theft and prevent criminals from using recycling services inappropriately, according to Dinnington Today.
In the last five years, the number of mobile phone thefts in Nottinghamshire has been staying at about the same level, with up to 3,500 such offences reported annually.
Police spokesperson, Detective Inspector Leona Scurr, explained that the new task force will hope to generate a reduction in the amount of smartphone theft and other mobile crimes in the area.
She suggested that mobile users can do their bit to make it easier to stop thieves, such as making a note of the IMEI number of their handset and installing a phone-finding app, so that if it does go missing it can quickly be located.
DI Scurr went on to talk about the issues with mobile recycling and said that the taskforce would be closing loopholes, but not before finding out which groups are manipulating them to their advantage.
In addition, the police will be taking people to task over false mobile insurance claims, in particular those relating to theft, which can be a serious issue and cause higher premiums for all owners.
