Norwegian network provider to encourage phone recycling through data security

Various reports have found that while mobile phone recycling is increasingly common, there are many consumers out there who are reluctant to part ways with their old handset, for fear that it may still contain personal data which could be exploited.
Now a new scheme being operated by Norwegian provider, Telenor, is aiming to increase phone recycling rates and reduce the chances of data theft, which is good news for its thousands of customers.
PC Advisor reports that the provider is now using a new software solution which is explicitly designed to completely erase all private information on old smartphones and tablets, leaving no trace behind.
This software will be used on any device which is sent in to the firm to be recycled, according to a Telenor spokesperson.
To add even more security and peace of mind to the process, the smartphones and tablets which are being sent for recycling will only by handled by staff who have passed a security check, while their transit will be carried out via locked containers.
Promising to boost mobile recycling security is something that more companies should do, particularly in the UK, where there are many households that contain several fully recyclable devices which are no longer in use.
Adding tablets into the security mix is sensible as well, because many consumers now own these in addition to their mobile and all sorts of personal information can accumulate on these devices.
While it is possible for users to carry out a full factory reset on an old device before sending it to be recycled, there are still ways of reconstituting the deleted data, which is why a more thorough, professional approach is desirable, so hopefully, this trend will spread to other nations.
