Northern Ireland recycling levels increase
Monday, January 23, 2012 - 09:03:30
The amount of waste that households and businesses are sending to landfill is dropping steadily across Northern Ireland, with a fall in collection volumes of five percent in the past 12 months, according to the government.
The clear reason for this is that people are choosing to recycle many more items which might previously have been dumped in the general waste bins, rather than reused to benefit the environment and the economy.
In total, NI household recycling rates grew to 43 per cent, which is up by one per cent on the figures calculated at the end of 2010.
Environment Minister, Alex Attwood, explained that for most people the act of reducing their waste output and choosing to recycle was common sense. He also said that this was going to be greatly beneficial to our ecosystem, as fewer needless and less harmful dumping will be conducted in 2012.
Household waste still makes up 88 per cent of the total collected by the authorities and so it is clear that the onus is on individual families to improve recycling rates and bring the figures up over the coming year.
Ten per cent of the total recycled waste was made up of things like glass and electrical goods like mobile phones.
People across the UK can do their bit for the environment by selling their old phone online, with companies refurbishing or reusing the components within a handset and never just simply dumping it.
For many, getting a bit of cash for their old phone is a nice bonus, which can help take the sting out of paying for an upgrade. The fact that your actions will be green and efficient is also great, but like household recycling, it is all about making it as convenient as possible to entice the largest number of people to get involved.
