Nokia takeover rumours implicate Samsung

After Microsoft was reported to be in talks to buy faltering mobile manufacturer Nokia last week, it now seems as though fresh speculation is putting Samsung into the same arena.
The South Korean tech giant is apparently eyeing up the Finnish firm, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal. No official statement from either organisation has been forthcoming, although a Samsung official was quoted as saying that no comment would be made on rumours.
Observers are not convinced that Samsung has anything to gain by buying Nokia, largely because it already has its own selection of smartphones based on Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform and is going to be supporting the software into the future.
According to Boy Genius Report, there was no success in Microsoft's alleged bid of £12 billion for Nokia because executives at the mobile company wanted an additional £5 billion before they would be happy with the valuation of their business.
Nokia is committed to launching its first range of Windows Phone 7 handsets early next year and it will need to up the pace of production if it is to keep up with its major rivals. Less than a decade ago it was in an unchallenged position of dominance, outpacing all of its rivals in market share, but in the last few years its lack of competitive smartphones has seen it suffer a quite spectacular fall from grace.
Of course all of this information is to be looked upon with a healthy degree of cynicism because nothing concrete has been announced and speculation runs rife in the mobile industry. It does seem that Nokia is seeking buyers to help rescue it from the brink, although Samsung is unlikely to be the firm to do so in the short term.
