Nokia retires Symbian brand name

It seems that Nokia is trying to leave its links to the Symbian mobile operating system in the past as it has decided to rebrand the platform for future releases.
The Symbian Belle update will, from now on, be known as Nokia Belle, signalling that the Finnish manufacturer wants to remove any of the negative connotations connected with the software, as it continues its partnership with Microsoft while still supporting the older operating system.
Nokia sneaked the announcement into a blog post in which it explained that the updated interface of the Belle platform will be launching across a number of older phones, including the N8.
Symbian was considered to be a thorn in the side of Nokia for several years, during which rivals like Android and iOS arose and subsequently outclassed what had once been the benchmark smartphone platform.
Nokia phones running Symbian have already been retired from the US market and now it looks like UK users will never see the platform again, at least not using its previous brand name.
The Nokia Lumia 800, which runs Windows Phone 7.5, has been the company's flagship mobile for several weeks now, although it looks like sales figures may not match up to the high expectations which had been set prior to its launch.
Nokia is also developing the Lumia 900, which could make its debut at the start of 2012, adding a larger display, slimmer design and better camera to the mix.
Meanwhile, the bottom end of the market, which Symbian handsets have occupied for some time, could also be targeted by Windows Phone, once the Tango update rolls out, allowing lower powered models a chance to run Microsoft's mobile operating system. Nokia has been surviving on the sales of its budget handsets, so this would be good news for it.
