Nokia launches new Lumia phones

Nokia caused a stir earlier this week when it officially unveiled a pair of new Lumia smartphones running Windows Phone 8.
The flagship Lumia 1520 is the most interesting model to emerge from this manufacturer in 2013 because as well as packing a full HD 1080p screen, it is the first Windows Phone handset to use a quad core processor.
This puts it on a level playing field with rival phablets like the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and means that Windows Phone is no longer languishing behind Android from a purely technical standpoint.
Of course, Microsoft's mobile operating system has been designed to take advantage of handset hardware optimally, ensuring that performance is good whether you choose a budget model or a top tier device. But the Lumia 1520 does feel like a sensible addition to Nokia's range and it will be interesting to see how all of its power is used.
The Lumia 1320 is the second of Nokia's recent revelations and matches the 1520 in terms of display size, with a six inch panel putting it at the larger end of the spectrum. The screen has a 720p resolution and thus a lower pixel density, which does involve making a compromise on crispness.
On the inside you get a dual core 1GHz processor and a modest slice of RAM, making it all the more affordable than its quad core sibling.
Both of these new Lumia phones feature colourful exteriors and relatively slender chassis, along with large batteries, to ensure that the big screens are powered up all day.
Nokia is making some bold moves under the stewardship of new owner Microsoft and the latest Lumia phones are evidence of its new-found ingenuity, so hopefully, strong sales will result from its willingness to experiment.
