Nokia hints at Symbian UI update, continued support.

Finnish mobile manufacturer Nokia has reaffirmed its commitment to the Symbian platform while showcasing major changes to the user interface.
Nokia has come under pressure after recently announcing a deal which will bring Windows Phone 7 to its future line up of high end smartphones. However, it looks like Symbian 3 will still be getting much-needed updates into the future despite the fact that it will no longer be the firms' flagship smartphone platform of choice.
The Nokia N8 is the Symbian 3 handset which Nokia has shown running an updated interface at a press event in China, according to Engadget, with a number of changes coming to its homescreen.
The press shots imply that the homescreen on Symbian 3 devices will feature new widgets, an added dose of social networking via Facebook and an improved interface for messaging and emails to keep you up to date.
Nokia could be adding three to four virtual buttons ranged along the base of the display, incorporating Android-style functions like home, call, menu and perhaps an additional search key.
Although Windows Phone 7 is being used as a crutch with which Nokia can hobble into the modern market, the firm is projecting Symbian 3 sales of 150 million during the coming 12 months, which means that the platform is still relevant to the firm, if only from a financial point of view as it quickly develops handsets for Microsoft's platform.
A Nokia spokesperson explained that Symbian would remain a core part of the company's strategy in the coming years, although it would definitely step out of the spotlight. Symbian handsets are hugely popular in developing areas of the world because they are inexpensive but still offer a high level of functionality, which could help to sustain the platform.
