Nokia N9 rumoured for August 19th UK launch

The Nokia N9 could be made available in the UK in the middle of next month, according to the latest rumours which suggest that this MeeGo-powered handset will be launching on August 19th.
There were many who never expected the N9 to arrive at all after Nokia switched its allegiances to Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 and seemingly abandoned work on any handsets based on the MeeGo platform developed in partnership with Intel.
However, the N9 was officially announced earlier in the year and with a four inch OLED display, eight megapixel camera and up to 64GB of onboard storage, it will have a decent selection of hardware to compliment the original software.
PhoneArena has quoted sources from Russia as claiming that the Nokia N9 will be launching around Europe on August 19th, which would presumably indicate that its UK arrival will be on the same date.
The N9 is interesting from more than just one angle, because it is thought to be the basis for the first Windows Phone 7 handset created by Nokia and as such will be a telling prelude to what the Finnish firm has planned for Microsoft's latest mobile operating system.
Those concerned about investing in a phone that is packaged with MeeGo, an untested platform which could end up on the scrapheap quite quickly, have been addressed directly by Nokia, which is promising to keep supporting this operating system over the coming years.
Of course Nokia's position as the world's most prolific manufacturer of smartphones was recently usurped by Apple thanks to the iPhone, so the company is heavily invested in finding success in Windows Phone 7. The plus side for consumers is that the N9 could be a very cheap device with high end features, so recycling your old mobile phone will help to cover a decent chunk of the cost.
