Nokia N9 revives promise of MeeGo handset

Nokia's first smartphone based on the MeeGo operating system has just been announced, despite the fact that many thought it might never emerge after the Finnish manufacturer struck a deal with Microsoft earlier in the year.
The Nokia N9 could be the only MeeGo device to ever emerge from the lab, but its list of vital statistics suggests that it will not be a poor investment as it packs plenty of modern hardware to make it competitive.
A 1GHz processor, dedicated graphics chip and 3.9 inch AMOLED display give it all the right features to rival its contemporaries, although its lack of dual core does dim its initial impact a little.
On the rear the eight megapixel camera will allow for 720p HD video capture in native widescreen thanks to its wide angle lens and Nokia is likely to retain its role as the world's best camera phone manufacturer with the N9.
Now the N9's processing power is not going to be the main attraction, since the MeeGo platform will be under significant scrutiny upon its first appearance on the market. Various games and apps are promised, with an edition of Angry Birds sitting alongside dedicated turn by turn navigation.
Integration for social networking sites with live notifications for Facebook and Twitter is promised and because there are no physical buttons on the front of the device it will be necessary to use swiping gestures to return to the three main homescreens.
With a trio of fun colours and a premium finish on offer, the Nokia N9 certainly looks the part next to other high end handsets. Much more coverage, analysis and criticism is sure to follow, because the main aim of most media observers will be to find out whether or not MeeGo is any good.
