Nokia's Windows Phone 7 deal sealed with £600 million payment

Software giant Microsoft has reportedly put £600 million on the table, in order to ensure that Finnish mobile maker Nokia, is willing to commit to the deal which will see a new range of Windows Phone 7-based handsets hit the market later this year.
The billion dollar golden handshake is not just a one-way payment that Microsoft is hoping will get greater exposure for its mobile operating system, but a small part of a wider licensing deal, which will, in turn, see Nokia reimburse the firm for every mobile sold.
Some sources are saying that Nokia was looking at both Windows Phone 7 and Android as potential platforms to help prevent its share of the smartphone market sliding further, according to Bloomberg. The £600 million incentive from Microsoft is alleged to be the thing which tipped the balance in its favour.
Others are convinced that Nokia was less likely to choose Android because there are already a slew of competing handsets from rival manufacturers which are based on Google's platform.
By opting for Windows Phone 7, it is possible for Nokia to whittle down its potential rivals by a significant degree and have a relatively unique selling point for any handsets which are based on this platform.
At the time of writing, it is being reported that neither Microsoft nor Nokia has signed on the dotted line to ratify the agreement, but it seems that unless something disastrous occurs, this will indeed be one of the biggest deals to be done in the mobile industry this year.
Nokia's shareholders have not been entirely satisfied with the Microsoft hook-up, but the clear commitment of the software giant as demonstrated by this rumoured payment, should surely inspire a little confidence in those who stand to profit from the success of Windows Phone 7 handsets.
