Nintendo denies that smartphone is on the cards

With the launch of the PlayStation-certified Sony Ericsson Xperia Play this month, rival manufacturer of portable consoles, Nintendo, has been asked whether it might make its own smartphone, but the Japanese firm denied that it would ever enter the mobile market.
Many observers had suggested that Nintendo might be well placed to take on the Xperia Play with its own brand of mobile gaming device, although president of the firm's American arm, Reggie Fils-Aime, dismissed the idea.
In an interview with CNN, he said that Nintendo has no inclination to take the plunge and create a portable device which is both a smartphone and a gaming-friendly entertainment centre.
Mr Fils-Aime said that Nintendo has the ability to win over consumers without having to entice them with phone-like functionality.
He is clearly talking from a position of power, since the recent launch of the portable Nintendo 3DS resulted in a scramble by UK customers, to become one of the first 120,000 people in the country to own the device.
The Xperia Play, on the other hand, has not had as smooth a launch. Delays put in place by network providers and luke warm reviews, have put a slight dampener on the arrival of Sony Ericsson's flagship gaming smartphone.
One of the main reasons that Nintendo is keeping out of the mobile market may be all the costly extras which it will need to take into account, according to spokesperson, Hideki Konno.
With a controlled, closed-down gaming platform like the 3DS, it has the ability to secure the market and make maximum profits, but it would have a much tougher time of it in the competitive mobile market. This is something which Sony Ericsson might well discover over the lifespan of the Xperia Play.
