New iPhone launch expected to prompt recycling rush

Apple is preparing to unleash its latest flagship smartphone on the world next week, a move which is expected to encourage plenty of people across the UK to ditch their current model and make the leap to the cutting edge iPhone 8.
In previous years the release of a new iPhone has also gone hand in hand with a rapid increase in the number of people who sell their old mobiles in order to claw back a bit of cash to reinvest in their new purchase. But the savviest consumers will know exactly when to recycle unwanted handsets, as leaving it to the last minute can often mean missing out on a chunk of dough.
As with any other marketplace, the world of mobile recycling is fuelled by supply and demand. Recycling firms and used device buyers will be more likely to pay a premium price for a desirable handset like the iPhone when not many are being sold, while prices should drop if there is a sudden influx of quality second hand models.
The Sun reports that people who sell their phone on the day that the iPhone 8 is released could take a 25 per cent hit on the resale amount compared with those who get in early and part ways with their old handset a week ahead of schedule.
Since used iPhones can sell for hundreds of pounds, this can represent quite a significant drop in value which many owners will want to avoid.
To take this route consumers will need to be confident that they want to upgrade to the iPhone 8 before even hearing about its specifications and capabilities. But with Apple’s track record for pushing the envelope, it is a safe bet that its next handset will be worth the gamble.
