New campaign seeks to address cup recycling crisis

Disposable paper cups used to serve coffee and other takeaway drinks are seen as one of the biggest sustainability issues facing the UK at the moment, but a fresh scheme from manufacturer Huhtamaki seeks to tackle this head-on.
REB News reports that the firm will be producing a range of cups which are not only fully recyclable, but also come with messaging and additional information to encourage consumers to behave responsibly when disposing of them after use.
Plenty of traditional takeaway cups have not been possible to process for recycling because of the type of lining they feature, but these single layer alternatives from Huhtamaki do not suffer from this downside.
Furthermore the new cups are now printed with a note which urges anyone who comes in contact with them to pop them in a relevant recycling receptacle, rather than mixing them in with general waste and ultimately sending them to landfill.
In addition the manufacturer has added a QR code to each cup that provides a link to a site on which extra info is available. This is intended to keep consumers up to date with the latest cup recycling news, as well as suggesting ways in which they can act more sustainably in their day to day lives according to the choices they make when they are out and about.
Initiative spokesperson, Becci Eplett, said that the updated cup design is not only effective and practical in real world use, but also aesthetically pleasing and ethically endowed with important messages that should boost recycling rates amongst hot beverage drinkers across the UK.
The paper used in the construction of the cups is 100 per cent recycled in its own right and can once against be recycled at a growing number of collection points nationally.
