New Zealand schools use mobile recycling to acquire new equipment

Hundreds of schools in New Zealand are taking advantage of the fundraising power of mobile phone recycling, in order to get the cash necessary to buy essential new equipment for use in the classroom.
Almost 300 educational establishments have signed up to the Starship School Phone Swap scheme and the recycling of mobile phones as part of the initiative, will not just benefit children when they are learning, but will also help to fund hospitals which cater to the needs of youngsters.
Mobile recycling firm Folamh, has partnered with the Starship Foundation, in order to organise the scheme and each school involved will be attempting to collect as many old handsets as possible. Funds will be sent to schools as well as to the air ambulance service, which helps to save the lives of hundreds of seriously ill children each year.
Various pieces of equipment can be secured by schools which collect the most phones. Fifty-five handsets will bag them a high-end digital camera, while 570 will allow them to install an interactive whiteboard and provide training to staff so that they are able to use these advanced tools.
The first school to register was home to just 170 students, but these relatively limited numbers were still able to collect almost 300 old handsets, showing just how many people have mobiles just lying around at home gathering dust.
Similar mobile recycling drives have been operated for UK charities and it seems like a great, selfless way to make the most out of an outdated handset. Given that most people replace their mobile once every 12 to 24 months, there is a lot of untapped potential in these products which can be put to good use by recycling and then donating the payout to charity.
