New BlackBerry handsets nearing completion

BlackBerry maker RIM has announced that it is almost ready to finalise its new smartphones, with only a few tweaks to the new BB 10 operating system required before they are prepped for launch.
It was previously thought that RIM would get the first of its new smartphones out to consumers in the autumn, but it had to push back the release to early 2013.
Now the Wall Street Journal is reporting that RIM is confident it can hit this revised target for a launch date.
RIM will actually be releasing two distinct new BlackBerry phones next year. One will follow in the footsteps of traditional BlackBerry devices and use a physical QWERTY keypad, while the other is going to rely on a touchscreen interface.
RIM chief executive, Thorsten Heins, revealed earlier this week that the company will actually be licensing the BB 10 platform out to other manufacturers, which means devices other than those bearing the BlackBerry branding could also feature the same software.
The drop off in sales of RIM's existing BlackBerry handsets has put it in a difficult financial position and some had worried that it might go under altogether, or even divide itself in half, to preserve the profitable messaging side of the business, while the troubled manufacturing arm was quarantined.
The good news for fans of BlackBerry who are thinking about picking up the new devices in 2013, is that early reports suggest that RIM is on the right track in terms of both the hardware and the software.
Impartial sources that have had a chance to play with pre-release versions of the smartphones have said that there is definitely promising progress being made at RIM and so it just remains to see whether or not consumers are going to buy them in large enough numbers.
