NFC handset added to Orange roster

UK network provider Orange is making the Samsung Wave 578 available to UK customers in a bid to make NFC (Near Field Communication) functionality a more commonly available service on British shores.
NFC is the contactless payment technology which allows people to make small purchases using their smartphone and a compatible terminal when they are out and about.
The Samsung Wave 578 should bring NFC to a wider audience, thanks to its budget price point and an offer currently running, by which Orange and payment partner Barclaycard will add £10 of credit to your NFC account if you sign up now.
In addition to getting £10 free, users will also receive 10 per cent cashback on any purchase they make for the next three months, which is yet another way in which networks and payment firms are attempting to propagate NFC services and make it more natural for UK consumers to pay via their mobile phones.
A 3.2 inch touchscreen display, 3.2 megapixel camera and the in-house Bada smartphone operating system make the Wave 578 an appropriately decent smartphone, which will not win any awards but definitely ticks all the right boxes when it comes to features.
In other NFC news, Google recently launched its Google Wallet service for NFC compatible handsets like the Nexus S.
This is currently limited to US customers but could soon make its way across the pond for UK-based Nexus S owners to use.
Major retailers such as Boots, Tesco and Burger King are jumping on the NFC bandwagon, as are payment card companies such as Visa, so it seems inevitable that the mobile phones of the future will all have NFC in some shape or form.
Bear in mind that you may not want to sell your old mobile to fund the purchase of an NFC-ready handset quite yet because of the limited availability of the actual terminals on the high street, so standard models will still cope.
