Motorola enters budget smartphone market

Motorola will be competing at the affordable end of the smartphone industry, with its freshly launched handset known as the MotoSmart.
While it has been courting big spenders with its Atrix range, Motorola is making the MotoSmart available for just £100 in the UK, while the phone will be on contracts for as little as £7 a month, according to TechRadar.
The phone is powered by a 600MHz single core processor, with 512MB of RAM and it features a 3.5 inch touchscreen display around the front. The low resolution of this screen means that it will not match something like the iPhone 4S for clarity, but it should do an acceptable job, nevertheless.
On the back of the phone is a three megapixel camera, but Motorola has been talking up the quality of the lens in order to overcome reservations users may have about this relatively low pixel count. It is even claimed that this snapper can match the quality of five megapixel cameras, which would make up for the modest censor resolution.
Version 2.3 of Android is preinstalled and Motorola has clearly gone to town on the interface in its usual fashion. While it might have been nice to see Android 4.0 featured, it is apparent that this platform will not be at its best on the modest hardware found here.
Early indications suggest that Motorola will need to tinker a little more with the software in order to optimise it and get the interface running smoothly.
It will also need to consider the fact that it will be putting the phone up against rival handsets like the Huawei Ascend G300, many of which have larger displays with higher resolutions and even more capable processors. Hopefully, the MotoSmart will find its place in the market after a few adjustments.
