Mobile recycling firm pays out £100 million over five years

UK mobile phone recycling firm Mazuma has just announced that since it started trading back in 2006, it has given out payments to mobile users totalling more than £100 million.
The significance of this figure not only resonates within the business itself but across the entire mobile recycling industry, as Mazuma is the first mobile recycling organisation to surpass the £100 million mark in buying old handsets.
More than 1,600 different mobile models are available to be exchanged for a cash payment with Mazuma and it is expanding its catalogue of recyclable goods to include tablet computers such as the Apple iPad.
Mazuma MD, Charlo Carabott, said that there were a number of reasons for the success of the organisation, ranging from its excellent customer service record to its competitive prices delivered to consumers who trade in their mobiles. He also pointed out that at the moment it is the only mobile phone recycling business in the country which allows users to get the cash for their phones the same day via bank transfer.
Mr Carabott said that the £100 million that had been paid back to many UK mobile users over the years was a real testament not only to the economic value of mobile recycling, but also to the important reduction in environmental damage which has been made, as recycling is much greener than simply disposing of old handsets at landfill sites.
Each month Mazuma deals with about 150,000 mobile phones from across the country, sending some on to new homes in the developing world, while others are broken down in order to recycle their valuable components and dispose safely of the potentially harmful parts which might otherwise leak and cause trouble for the environment in other situations.
