Mobile recycling firm donates handsets to developing nation

Envirofone has given away 300 mobiles to budding business people in Sierra Leone in order to make sure that their companies have a chance of getting onto their feet in this developing country.
The mobiles were donated as part of the Splash Mobile Money project, which seeks to get natives of Sierra Leone the training and skills necessary to make it in the business world.
Significantly, the mobile phones are not just going to enable youngsters to call and text one another, but also to transfer funds back to their families, as part of the Splash for Cash charity drive.
Envirofone, which is based near Manchester in the UK, is just getting involved in this important charity project and it is planning further donations throughout 2011 to help people in other African nations get the mobile communication devices they need to get ahead.
Envirofone's Julie Snape, said that the partnership came about as a result of a contact based in Sierra Leone passing on details about the charity's efforts. She said that the company is now looking to UK consumers who have very old mobiles which have no real value on the market, to donate them in order to become future fodder for the donations scheme.
Snape pointed out that if these ageing mobiles are left to become entirely obsolete in drawers or sent to landfill in the UK, they are missing out on the potential to change someone's life in Africa.
She also said that because many residents of Sierra Leone do not have bank accounts, the mobile phones are used for transactions which would otherwise be impossible.
Envirofone CEO, Nick Brown, said that restoring old phones to a working condition was part of the company's everyday operation and noted that this charity donation shows just how important recycling in developed nations can be for those less fortunate.
