Mobile recycling can help launch brands in new markets

A mobile phone recycling company has spoken about the benefits associated with harnessing the sustainable resale of old devices for the purposes of promoting brands in developing nations, without keeping the cost of devices prohibitively high.
The Register reports that eRecyclingCorps has made a pertinent point about how companies like Apple could establish themselves in places like India, without also having to slash the RRP of their new, high-end iPhones. Historically, these tend to be a little too costly for middle class buyers in emerging markets, who see such smartphones as tokens of aspiration.
The vast majority of mobile phones which are sold for recycling end up being refurbished and sold once more to buyers both in the UK and across the world.
Since models like the iPhone are the most regularly recycled, it makes sense for the original manufacturers to latch onto this state of affairs and encourage customers in the west to sell their old, unwanted handsets. That way, the companies have some affordable inventory to ship out to developing nations.
Most handsets that are recycled have only been used for the past two years, meaning that there is still plenty of life left in them and recycling firms can easily sell them on elsewhere.
Spokesperson, Kelly Carnago, did say that people in the UK are actually keeping hold of their handsets for longer than ever, in part due to contracts being more extensive and the lack of innovation offered by new models as they launch.
This is a criticism levelled in particular at the iPhone 5S and the Samsung Galaxy S5, which are not as revolutionary as some of their predecessors.
But whatever the case, selling mobile phones for recycling can be good for consumers and manufacturing brands alike.
