Mobile phone recycling scheme supported by celebs

A scheme designed to help people recycle old mobile phones, to provide autistic children with iPad tablets, has received a major boost thanks to support from high profile celebrities.
Irish actor and singer, Keith Duffy, who is best known for his role in boy band, Boyzone, has recently joined football legend Paul Scholes and model-turned chat show host Melanie Sykes, in providing publicity for the initiative.
Charity spokesperson, Jennifer Cullinan, said that the project has already resulted in more than 1200 Apple tablets being passed on to children with autism. This is all funded thanks to an exchange programme, whereby members of the public hand in their old mobile phones to be recycled.
The benefits of giving iPads to autistic children is clear, according to Cullinan, who said that many youngsters who have been non-verbal since birth quickly start to speak within just a few weeks of interacting with the tablet.
The Irish Autism Action group and UK charity, Hearts & Minds, are joining forces in support for this project, along with the famous faces, of course.
The initiative is setting the admittedly ambitious target of securing mobile phone donations from just under one percent of the people who live in Britain and Ireland, which would allow it to give out iPads to 155,000 autistic children.
Autism is an increasingly understood disorder, that can be pinpointed in children while they are very young, often having an impact upon the way that relationships and social situations are managed. Other aspects, such as language, can be affected by it, but with the help of charitable projects like this, it is possible to improve the situation for thousands of families across the country.
Autism now affects one in every 166 children and diagnosis is becoming more prevalent, so any help that can be sought will be thankfully received.
