Mobile phone recycling ranks revealed
Wednesday, October 17, 2012 - 12:24:03
A list of the most regularly recycled mobile phones in the UK has been published, revealing the changing habits and shifting trends of the market over the past 12 months.
Given the quick turnover that typifies the mobile industry, new devices often replace older models after a matter of months, with some people selling their old mobile phones within a year of purchasing them.
Topping the list is the three year old Apple iPhone 3GS 16GB, which is understandably being sold off in large numbers, since people are looking to upgrade to the iPhone 5 and 4S.
The iPhone 4 16GB was in second place, ahead of the BlackBerry Curve 8520 in third and the four year old iPhone 3G 8GB in fourth position.
Interestingly, there was only one Samsung device in the top 10; the Galaxy S took seventh position, sharing this slot with the similarly equipped HTC Desire.
This could imply that people are holding on to their Galaxy S2 models for longer than the recycle-happy iPhone owners, perhaps because Apple devices are more likely to hold their value over time.
In addition to this, since the Galaxy S2 only arrived in 2011, it is likely that people are still midway through their contracts and a recycling influx may begin in 2013.
While Nokia is one of the world's most prolific mobile manufacturers, it does not enter the recycling rankings until 15th place, when the popular 5800 XpressMusic makes an appearance, according to PhonesReview.
Recycling trends are interesting for those in the business, but they can also help consumers determine which devices are popular and thus assess whether or not now is the right time to recycle, to get the best possible price for an old, unwanted handset that deserves a new home.
