Mobile phone recycling raises money to fight cancer

A shop in the Cornish town of St Austell has used a mobile phone recycling drive to generate cash to donate to a cancer charity, according to This Is Cornwall.
A branch of network provider O2's high street chain of stores marked its third year in operation with the charity initiative, with funds going towards Tanya's Courage Trust.
Initially, the staff had hoped to collect 100 handsets from locals looking to donate old mobiles that they no longer needed for a good cause. While they did not end up meeting this target, a decent sum was still raised.
Mobile phone recycling can be used to benefit charities of all kinds and a growing number of fundraisers are tuning into the benefits of this approach.
One of the biggest advantages is that millions of mobile phones sit unused and unwanted in the households of the UK, which means that simply by raising awareness about the recycling opportunities, it is easy to extract donations from the public.
Donating a mobile phone to a charity has the added benefit of clearing out some space at home for those who have hoarded handsets, rather than getting rid of them in another way.
O2 spokesperson, Becky Reynolds, said that she was pleased with the success of the recycling drive at the store and said that there will be another one targeted at raising cash for a different charity during the Christmas holidays.
You can sell your old mobile phone online and use the cash you get for it to pass on to the good cause of your choice. Some recycling providers will even handle the donation for you, so that there is minimal hassle, so what you do with your unwanted handset is really up to you.
