Mobile Recycling Kiosks Set for UK Rollout

There are lots of ways for British smartphone owners to sell their old phones, with online comparison of available offers from recycling firms being arguably the best way to get a good deal. One increasingly common alternative is to sell a phone at an automated kiosk, and such solutions have been cropping up across the country at many retail locations in recent years.
Now a new contender is entering this crowded marketplace, with American operator ecoATM confirming its intention to install a total of 1000 collection points in the UK before 2020.
At the moment there are just 18 of the firm’s kiosks in use over here, according to Mobile News. However, the expansion plans that are on the table will change this significantly.
Company spokesperson Dave Maquera pointed out that Brits are particularly savvy about the innate value of second-hand smartphones, which is why the recycling market is already very strong here. He said that this also meant there were a lot of ways for consumers to recoup this residual value when the time to upgrade arrives.
Experts estimate that there are at least 125 million mobile handsets that are sitting and gathering dust in UK households, so there is still a need to convince people to take action and sell old devices rather than hanging on to them for no good reason.
In addition to allowing owners to get money back for selling unwanted phones, this also means that the precious materials contained within modern devices can be recycled and used for make new gadgets further down the line.
In many ways ecoATM is a little late to the mobile recycling part, especially in a mature market like the UK. It will be interesting to see whether it can get a foothold alongside more established operators.
