Mini iPhone rumours dismissed

A source close to Apple has said that a small-scale version of the iPhone is not currently in development, despite the fact that many have circulated rumours suggesting this to be the case.
A report in the New York Times quotes an unnamed insider as saying that the iPhone Mini or Nano is not being built, but does shed some light on what the fifth iPhone will bring when it inevitably arrives in the summer.
The most significant point made by the source is that Apple could be looking to bring down the cost of the iPhone 5, to make it more popular and attainable than ever.
The source said that Apple would cut down the price by reducing the capabilities of the internal components, without actually altering the size of the device.
At the moment, the iPhone 4 is at the top of the price ladder in an already expensive mobile market, with networks only partially subsidising its costs on all but the most expensive monthly contracts. This has not stopped millions investing in Apple's mobile brand, but many would be keen for a less costly option.
To help reduce the strain on the hardware and thus make the iPhone 5 cheaper, it is thought that Apple will be shifting its focus to relying on cloud-based services like MobileMe to get the job done. This would mean the users would not need huge storage space on their phone, as data could be stored remotely on Apple servers.
Until Apple gives the iPhone 5 an official airing in June, there will be plenty more rumours like this. Apple may not be keen to take a technological step back with its next release, so cheaper iPhones may not be forthcoming, but the concept is worth considering, nonetheless.
