Milton Keynes battery recycling scheme a success

Twelve months on from the start of a battery recycling scheme in the city of Milton Keynes and local residents have managed to responsibly dispose of over 14 tonnes of old power cells, according to the council.
It is possible for people to put their unwanted batteries out in order to be collected as part of a weekly recycling drive and since the initiative began a year ago, it seems to have been thoroughly embraced.
At the moment, just 16 of the UK's local authorities offer battery recycling facilities to residents at home, with recycling company, Valpak, joining forces with the Milton Keynes council, in order to make sure that everything runs smoothly after collection.
Batteries can be recycled in a number of ways, because the chemicals and materials which they contain are precious and easy to reuse.
Milton Keynes has proven itself to be one of the UK's best areas when it comes to battery recycling since the scheme started.
People can recycle their old batteries regardless of where they have come from. This means standard AA and AAA batteries from remote controls and other portable devices, can be recycled alongside larger cells from old mobile phones and laptops.
The scheme will even accept the battery packs used in cordless power tools, with the only condition being that they can actually fit inside the bag which is provided to residents to store the batteries.
Of course, even if your local council does not offer door to door battery collection, you should be able to find a way to dispose of your unwanted old mobile phone cells safely.
Many supermarkets offer battery recycling bins and a nearby recycling centre should also have such facilities on offer, if you have lots of them lying around the house.
