Microsoft aiming at entry level market with new mobile OS

Windows Phone 7 launched in late 2010 and still has fairly hefty minimum hardware specifications, which means most handsets based on the platform are relatively expensive. However, rumours suggest that with the eventual arrival of the Tango update for the operating system a broader range of cheap and cheerful smartphones will be able to run Microsoft's OS.
According to WinRumours, the Tango update will be able to allow manufacturing partner Nokia to create a selection of bargain basement Windows Phone 7 handsets, bringing it to lower price points and expanding the user base for those on tighter budgets.
One thing which has been noted about the Tango update is that it will be gunning for the Asian market where budget phones are big business. This does not mean that Nokia will not also bring its entry level handset to the UK, but could suggest a direction behind Microsoft's strategy.
The Tango update will be sandwiched between the Mango update, arriving in the autumn and the Apollo update scheduled for some point in 2012.
In other Windows Phone 7 news announced this week Nokia said that it would be discontinuing its Symbian operating system in the US. This means that no more Symbian smartphones will be launched in America, heralding the gradual succession of this flagging platform from the global market as the Finnish manufacturer focuses on Microsoft-based products.
With the death of Symbian it will be necessary for Nokia to create new budget handsets since this was previously its go-to platform, so if Windows Phone 7 Tango does lower the entry requirements it will be fully harnessed to target those UK mobile consumers looking to sell their old Symbian phone and upgrade without spending too much cash in the process.
