Microsoft CEO promises growth for Windows Phone 7

Windows Phone 7 launched last year but Microsoft's chief exec, Steve Ballmer, has been honest about its short term performance during the World Wide Partner Conference held this week in Los Angeles.
After reporting the record-breaking speed with which desktop OS Windows 7 has made its way onto 400 million PCs since its 2009 arrival, Mr Ballmer said that Microsoft is still a very small player in the mobile market.
He put a positive spin on the minor impact of Windows Phone 7, saying that it has been an incredible year for the firm as a whole and pointing out that the highly competitive nature of the mobile market means that serious progress cannot be made overnight.
Current figures put the Windows Phone 7 stake in the mobile market at about one per cent. This is despite critical praise for the platform and a widespread adoption of the software by top handset manufacturers such as Samsung and HTC.
In the autumn a major update codenamed Mango is arriving on Windows Phone 7 handsets, adding hundreds of new features and hopefully bringing even more people over to the platform.
Multitasking, a new web browser and many more updates will keep existing users interested while winning over newcomers, or at least this is Microsoft's plan.
In addition to software revamps the support of Finnish mobile manufacturer Nokia will see yet another big name company joining the ranks of Windows Phone 7 supporters.
The next 12 months will be key for the development of Microsoft's platform in the mobile arena. It has the upper hand in many ways but the established positions of rivals Apple and Google might be hard to assail without serious investment in marketing and a big push by mobile networks to offer Windows Phone 7 as a viable alternative.
