Mazuma's MD speaks out

Charlo Carabott, the managing director of phone recycling company, Mazuma Mobile, has become an increasingly vociferous commentator in recent months, with a recent interview in Mobile Magazine allowing him to air his views on the industry as a whole.
Mr Carabott pointed out that the mobile phone recycling market has become incredibly competitive in a relatively short space of time. When Mazuma was founded six years ago, there were only two major rivals, but this has now spiralled into a sector containing 60 firms in the UK alone.
Mazuma deals with up to 100,000 recycled mobile phones every month, which means that it pays out around five million pounds every 30 days or so. The fact that it has averaged a customer satisfaction rating of 98 per cent is a source of pride for Mr Carabott.
The growing number of smartphones being purchased means that Mazuma is increasingly focused on buying high end handsets, with 52 per cent of its current customers sending in unwanted mobiles from this category.
BlackBerry is still the dominant brand when it comes to mobile recycling, with 41.9 per cent of all smartphones handled by Mazuma coming from this range.
However, Apple is not far behind, securing 38.2 per cent of the recycling market. This is unsurprising, given that Apple iPhone models typically hold onto their value well over time and users upgrade regularly to invest in the latest handset.
HTC's 11.9 per cent slice of the mobile recycling market is surprising, given that Samsung is far further down the list, with 5.2 per cent.
However, this figure also indicated fluctuating trends, because HTC was riding high on the success of the Desire handset around two years ago, but in the interim, its fortune has slipped somewhat, which Mazuma will no doubt detect later in the year.
