March 18th UK launch for LG Optimus 2X

The world's first dual-core smartphone, the LG Optimus 2X, is set to touchdown in the UK on the 18th of March, according to online pre-orders now being taken by retailer Play.com.
This confirms similar information received by a Swedish e-commerce firm, which also touted a March 18th release for LG's next flagship smartphone.
If you want to buy the Optimus 2X without a contract, it will be available for £470 SIM-free, which is actually a relatively reasonable price when compared to the current crop of high end handsets, which in general hover around this mark.
What sets the Optimus 2X apart from the likes of the iPhone 4 and Google Nexus S, is that while its processor will run at the same 1GHz speed, it will actually have two physical cores. This means it can divide tasks up and run multiple apps without being brought to its knees.
All of this processing power will be put into various impressive tasks, with 1080p HD video playback among the features that it boasts. It will also be able to record at this full HD resolution and with an HDMI output, it will be a great accompaniment to the HDTVs that fill most living rooms around the country.
Like the Google Nexus S, the Optimus 2X will run Android 2.3 and it will even cost roughly the same SIM free, but with all that new technology under the hood, it will be considerably more desirable than Google's offering when it launches in April.
Of course it is worth remembering that while the LG Optimus 2X looks very alluring now, it will be fighting for survival against various alternatives with dual-core power, once Mobile World Congress 2011 has taken place next month, so those looking for the next generation kicks, it might be sensible to hold off and play the field.
