London borough gets electronic waste recycling bins

Most people throughout the UK will have access to some kind of recycling collection at home, or will perhaps live in a place that has bins on the street, intended to accept both general waste and recyclable materials.
However, a new initiative enacted by Lambeth Council in London, has seen the rollout of relatively unusual recycling containers at 19 locations throughout the borough.
These containers, which are easy to find on street corners and close to major attractions, such as the Waterloo Millennium Green, are designed to accept energy efficient bulbs and used batteries.
You might assume that once a light bulb has stopped working you will need to just throw it away, but this new scheme proves that there is an alternative available.
Light bulbs need to be carefully recycled, not just because they contain glass but also because there are potentially harmful materials contained within them, even if they are of the energy efficient variety.
You can lessen the carbon footprint of illuminating your home even further if you decide to use energy efficient light bulbs and then recycle them after they have passed their usable lifespan.
Small amounts of mercury found in this type of bulb would do harm if simply sent to landfill or discarded in any other way, so the use of these recycling bins and similar facilities like them elsewhere in the UK is advised.
With this type of scheme, the success will be based upon the convenience offered to local residents. People are more likely to recycle if it is easy for them to do so, which makes the position of the recycling containers particularly important.
Ideally, it would be possible for people to deposit their used energy efficient bulbs for home collection, but this is not currently practical in many places.
