Lack of action on cyber threats leaves consumers exposed

The majority of people are not doing anything to make their use of the internet more secure, in spite of growing concerns about the risks that are posed by regular browsing.
This is according to a new study from security firm, McAfee, in which thousands of people from Europe and North America were questioned about their habits.
Almost two thirds of participants admitted that they felt increasingly worried about the level of protection that was available to them when heading online, with this fear growing over the past half decade.
However, instead of taking steps to address these concerns, a similar proportion simply choose to keep an eye out for any signs of fraud via their banking service of choice. This leaves them open to exploitation by malicious parties and makes it tougher to carry out safe shopping online.
This issue extends beyond adults and to younger generations, with 33 per cent of parents failing to set a good security example for their kids. This manifests itself in under-18s being allowed unfettered, unmonitored access to the internet, without the guidance necessary to keep them safe.
Analysts believe that there is a disconnect between how consumers feel about online security and their desire to actually do something to prevent themselves falling victim to scams, malware and other common threats.
Being able to enjoy safe shopping online without becoming exposed to a raft of exploitative tactics used by cybercriminals does require a level of knowledge and understanding. And if parents lack basic skills, it is likely that their children will grow up with the same gaps in their credentials.
More needs to be done to educate people about how to stay safe online, so that the security fears which most have can be tackled.
