LG promises flexible smartphone launch

LG is hot on the heels of Samsung when it comes to preparing a smartphone with a flexible screen for release, with the latest evidence suggesting that it might even beat its rival to the punch, with an ultra-durable handset of its own.
Known variably as the LG Flex and the LG Z, it was the subject of mere rumours in recent weeks, until LG released official confirmation that it was working on a handset endowed with a flexible display this week, without going so far as to confirm its name.
LG spokesperson, Dr Sang Deog Yeo, explained the technology behind the display, which unlike other smartphone panels, will use plastic instead of glass so that it can be manipulated and bent without breaking.
While LG has been bold enough to call it 'unbreakable,' the technology will surely have its limits. But compared to current generation smartphone displays, it will be a good deal more robust and should withstand bumps, scratches and other impacts, without shattering or being compromised in other ways.
The screen will use OLED systems and should be less than half a millimetre thick, as well as weighing in at under eight grams, even when a panel of around six inches across the diameter is created. This might mean that LG is working on a phablet to rival the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, which would certainly mix up the market a little.
LG's ambitions for flexible touchscreen displays do not lie solely with smartphones, although it did not get into the specifics of what other applications this technology could have. Observers have pointed out that this might mean that it is also going to create a smartwatch, putting it in the same market as the Galaxy Gear from Samsung, the Smartwatch 2 from Sony and Apple's much-hyped but currently unannounced iWatch.
