LG and Sharp debut impressive feature phones in Japan

Electronics manufacturers Sharp and LG have produced two distinct and unique smartphones which are set to hit the Japanese market.
From LG is the L-03C, a camera phone which blurs the lines between mobile and standalone digital snapper further than any handset to date. It has a 12 megapixel sensor, a Xenon flash and optics from Pentax, all combined in a shell which looks much more like a camera than a smartphone.
Although the megapixel count is shared with the Nokia N8, the LG L-03C will have the edge in terms of overall quality.
The L-03C hides its phone capabilities relatively well and as such looks unlike anything else on the market, although it will still make calls and offers a three inch touchscreen display on the rear which doubles up as a viewfinder.
Sharp's effort is definitely something to make you stop and stare. Called the Touch Wood, this originally appeared as a concept handset, but has now been confirmed for a production cycle of 15,000.
The Touch Wood has an irregular kidney shape and is backed with veneered wood which has been forested locally to Japan. This gives each handset a one-off grain and finish along with oodles of kitch appeal.
The Sharp handset is much more modern in terms of features than the LG offering. It has a five megapixel camera, net connectivity and a 3.4 inch touchscreen display with a suitably high resolution.
Both of these mobiles are hitting the Japanese market via network provider NTT DoCoMo later in the year or early in 2011. Whether either will ever make it to the UK is doubtful, but it is certainly interesting to keep abreast of what foreign markets are being offered and if you are particularly keen you can always import one of these handsets to use with a domestic network provider.
