LG Optimus One could get Android 2.3

Fears were raised earlier in the week when LG announced that the Optimus One and its other Android-based mid range smartphone siblings would not be getting an update to version 2.3 of Google's operating system.
However, the firm stepped back from its original insistence that the upgrade would not be possible and it now looks like there is a glimmer of hope for an update, if the South Korean firm is convinced that it will be good for the budget handsets.
LG had originally stated online that the Optimus One did not meet the minimum specifications required by Android 2.3, because its 600MHz processor did not match the 1GHz clock speed outlined by Google.
This statement resulted in a flurry of responses from third party Android programmers, who said that they were aware of no such requirements, resulting in a swift retraction of the original statement by LG.
It seems that no one actually knows the requirements of Android 2.3 because Google has yet to publish its document outlining backwards compatibility.
LG says that it will now wait until this is made available before it makes a decision on whether the Optimus One will get the upgrade, which means less people are likely to sell or recycle this phone as it is refreshed with new firmware and features.
The LG Optimus One has been one of the fastest selling smartphones offered by the South Korean firm and so there is a widespread user base that is hungry for updates to the Android platform.
Hopefully, LG will genuinely attempt to bring Android 2.3 to the Optimus One if the hardware is up to the task of running it. It does seem to be expressing reluctance with this untimely dismissal of the idea but hope springs eternal.
