Innovative electronics recycling scheme launched in Wales

A new project intended to encourage more people to recycle old mobile phones and other electronic items has just got underway in Wales, where people are not rewarded in cash for their contribution but instead get access to exclusive music events free of charge.
The South Wales Argus reports that the Make Noise Wales tour began at the weekend and included performances from bands and DJs, with free entry available to those who brought a recyclable gadget to donate.
The Make Noise project is actually a well established scheme aimed at alerting the under-25s to the benefits of recycling electronic waste rather than sending it to landfill. Over the past seven years it has been operating successfully in various parts of the UK and is now set to have an impact in Wales.
Project spokesperson, James Kay, explained that too many recyclable electronic items were simply tossed in with general waste at the end of their lifespan, rather than being dealt with in an eco-friendly manner. By running these events and giving young people free access in return for the donation of a device, the message of e-waste recycling is being conveyed in an effective and memorable way.
Close to half a tonne of unwanted electronics were gathered up last year by Make Noise and it is expected that this will be topped in 2017.
Of course, for those who have a particularly valuable used mobile phone, a better option may be to sell it online and then use the cash to buy tickets to events in the future. This will not only ensure that the handset is disposed of without posing a threat to the environment, but also allows more choice over the types of acts that are accessible as a result.
