Importance of recycling highlighted in Surrey

Surrey County Council has this month initiated a bold new scheme in which it hopes to convince more residents to recycle plastic waste. This could save hundreds of thousands of pounds of taxpayers' cash as a result, according to Surrey News.
At the moment, just under a third of all plastic waste is actually recycled in the county, which is a proportion that the council is hoping to increase significantly as a result of this campaign.
Almost a million adults live in Surrey and the council argues that if every one of them recycled just one additional plastic bottle per week for an entire year, the savings would hit £200,000. This is because the council has to pay a fee for the waste that it sends to landfill, so by recycling more items, it can cut down on this expense.
Council spokesperson, Mike Goodman, said that it was not just the financial benefits of recycling that made it appealing, but also the fact that with more people disposing of plastics responsibly the environment and ecology of the region will benefit.
Mr Goodman identified that recyclable plastics were widely available and could be turned into a variety of products, including toys for children.
The campaign is set to reward participants who promise to recycle more plastic waste over the coming 12 months by giving them a free mobile phone cover. The cover itself is created using recycled plastic that has been harvested from old bottles and has been stylishly designed to make it an attractive incentive.
The Pledge 4 Plastics scheme is rolling out across the county at the moment and it will be interesting to see whether it is a success, since even a small increase in Surrey’s recycling rate could save thousands of pounds.
