HTC posts bumper profits as Android popularity soars

The unending rise of the Android operating system has helped Taiwanese manufacturer HTC increases its profits by 200 per cent year on year.
In the first three months of 2011, it took home £315 million and a spokesperson said that it was all down to strong demand and positive reviews for its various Android-based handsets like the revamped Desire S and the upmarket Incredible S.
These profits will probably be plumbed back into HTC as it is said to be working on researching and developing the next generation of smartphone technology which will not only be more powerful but will also be better suited to modern life.
Around 1000 new jobs will be created as a result of HTC's drive to expand its business, which is obviously good news.
The popularity of Android and of HTC handsets in particular is definitely good news for consumers. Firstly they will be getting competitive, powerful options to choose from when they update their handsets and secondly they will get a better price for their used mobile, if it comes from one of the desirable ranges that sport Android.
At the moment the way in which mobiles retain their value can vary depending on make, model, age and condition, but like the used car market there is a lot of emphasis put on brand recognition, which makes it easy for hits like the iPhone 4 to cling onto their worth for longer.
With HTC planning high end dual core models like the Sensation and the Android market being bolstered with competing handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S2 at the top end and the Orange San Francisco at the budget end, things are looking bright for everyone involved. Rival platforms now have a fight on their hands.
