HTC Titan stomps into action

HTC made a big splash at last week's IFA 2011 event with the unveiling of a large new Windows Phone 7 handset, appropriately named the Titan.
This behemoth is deserving of its name because with a 4.7 inch Super LCD screen, it is considerably bigger than most of its rivals.
The Dell Streak had a five inch screen and launched last year, but the HTC Titan is the first device of this size to be marketed as a smartphone rather than as some kind of pseudo-tablet hybrid.
Oddly, the Titan retains the standard 800x480 resolution of all other WP7 handsets, presumably to stay in line with Microsoft's minimum requirements and provide a consistent user experience.
As well as the large screen, it has a 1.5GHz single core processor powering the latest Mango build of Windows Phone 7. In theory, this should make for a very slick user experience, but early impressions suggest that the already silky performance of WP7 is not noticeably enhanced via HTC's beefed up hardware.
You might think that such a big screen would result in a chunky overall chassis, but since the Titan measures 9.9 millimetres thick, it is suitably slinky when viewed in profile.
An eight megapixel camera on the rear is accompanied by twin LED flashes and HTC promises that it will deliver strong low light performance.
16GB of storage space will be available onboard, which does seem a little limited given the name of this handset. You also get all of the improvements boasted by WP7 Mango, including multitasking and further integration for social networking services.
Expect to see the HTC Titan hitting UK shores next month, with its smaller sibling the HTC Radar also making an appearance in a lower price bracket at around the same time.
