HTC Desire lacks power for Android 2.3 update

According to Taiwanese mobile manufacturer HTC, its Desire smartphone will not be getting a software update to add Android 2.3 Gingerbread, largely because the once powerful smartphone is now not up to the task of running the latest operating system.
HTC had originally planned on bringing Android 2.3 to the Desire at some point this month, but after weeks of development it has come to the conclusion that there simply is not enough memory onboard the phone to give users a smooth experience.
The problem here seems to be that the Desire will not have the memory to keep both Android and the HTC Sense interface operating without any glaring performance compromises. HTC said that its engineers have worked tirelessly but cannot find a solution that will not result in sacrifices being made should the update be applied.
The manufacturer used its Facebook page to make the announcement and took the opportunity to apologise to any customers who had been expectantly awaiting the update.
Recent rumours suggest that the Desire is coming close to the end of its shelf life after over a year at the top of the pile, with critical praise following wherever it went. If HTC does discontinue the handset it will be ending a landmark reign, but it will have to make way for a fresh batch of Android smartphones with more than enough power to run future iterations of Sense.
If you have an HTC Desire and are thinking about upgrading to the Android 2.3 toting, dual core glory of the HTC Sensation, its natural successor, then you will still be able to get a decent price online for this popular last generation mobile. Of course acting sooner rather than later will ensure that the maximum value is squeezed from the phone.
