HP debuts webOS smartphones

HP has pulled back the curtains on a pair of new smartphones based on Palm's webOS platform, although it seems that the Palm branding is being pulled from these devices, despite their pedigree.
The HP Pre 3 and the HP Veer have both been thrust into the spotlight this week, although average consumers may still be unimpressed, because webOS has not been a commercial success despite its critical acclaim.
The HP Pre 3 looks very good on paper, with evolutionary technology including a powerful 1.4GHz processor, up to 16GB of built-in storage space and high speed network connectivity.
The Pre 3 has had a serious screen upgrade, giving it 3.6 inches of real estate to beat the iPhone 4 for sheer size, while also allowing the inclusion of a much larger physical QWERTY keypad, which will keep messaging and email fans happy.
On the back a five megapixel camera with flash and high-def video capture completes what looks to be a competitive package. The HP Pre 3 will be available from the middle of 2011, but so far, no UK pricing or launch date has been set.
The HP Veer is much smaller than its sibling, but still has a slide-out QWERTY keypad and the latest version of the webOS software onboard. Its 800MHz processor goes hand in hand with its smaller form factor and it could be a success in the same vein as the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro.
The HP Veer will actually be arriving in stores before the Pre 3, with a Spring release pencilled in, although again, no UK information has been forthcoming.
It is significant to see HP essentially ditching the Palm branding for its new models, even as it retains the hardware look and the software feel forged by the firm.
