HD video recording comes to Xperia Play

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play has been on the market for a few months now and, with an incoming update, it will finally be able to record high definition video clips in 720p.
HD video capture has become a common feature on many modern smartphones and with a 1GHz processor and five megapixel camera, the Xperia Play has the basic hardware that should make this possible, but Sony Ericsson neglected to allow this in the software itself.
Once the handset is updated to Android 2.3.4 in the coming weeks, it will be possible for Xperia Play owners across the UK and the world to access this function.
Sony Ericsson created the Xperia Play primarily as a gaming smartphone, with slide-out control buttons replacing the normal full QWERTY keypad you might expect from such a chunky handset.
PlayStation certification has helped the Xperia Play live up to its lofty ambition of replacing your dedicated portable gaming device, but it could not be seen as a fully rounded smartphone until HD video recording was added to its roster of capabilities.
Early footage recorded on the Xperia Play in HD and published via XDA Developers, indicates that it will actually be able to shoot very solid video at 720p, with none of the visual wobbling or artefacts that can impact other smartphones as they struggle to make higher resolutions operate smoothly.
It is good to see any manufacturer extending the lifespan of a smartphone and adding new features via a software update. Of course compared to the dual core monsters currently roaming the top end of the mobile market at the moment, the Xperia Play looks a little underwhelming, but for fans of gaming it should still have enough oomph to convince them to part with their cash.
