Groundbreaking glass recycling centre opens doors in UK

A new facility which can turn waste glass into insulation has begun operating this week in Merseyside, following more than £10 million of investment to get it up and running.
Edie.net reports that this plant is the first of its kind worldwide and will massively reduce the amount of energy which is required to produce materials which can keep buildings warm.
Each year the facility is set to recycle over 350 million glass jars and bottles collected from consumers across the country. Cutting edge processing techniques can transform this glass and create insulation which is just as effective as existing options in this marketplace.
Managed by recycling firm, Veolia and Knauf Insulation, in partnership with one another, the centre in St Helens is saving the planet and also helping to boost the local economy, according to spokesperson, Estelle Brachlianoff.
She said that this approach to recycling would be the new gold standard for the industry as a whole and would likely be emulated in other parts of the world so that similar benefits can be spread far and wide.
Experts argue that moving towards a circular economy is essential for the sustainability of humanity as a whole. Furthermore, by converting waste materials into something useful, the cycle can continue and there will be less need for landfill sites.
The fact that the recycled glass is melted down right next door to where it is then turned into insulation means that hundreds of thousands of road miles are being cut out of the manufacturing process. This is the kind of efficiency which needs to be integrated into more parts of the industry, especially as recycling collections are on the rise and critics are concerned about the volumes of waste being shipped overseas from the UK.
