Greater Manchester hosts annual recycling week

This week marks the tenth year in a row that Greater Manchester has held its official recycling week during which residents are urged to take their old, unwanted electronics to local facilities for sustainable disposal.
Taking place between the 17th and 23rd of June, this annual event focuses on encouraging people to part ways with everything from old mobile phones to ancient electric kettles and other household gadgets.
Plenty of these products will end up in landfill sites because consumers may not realise that they can be recycled, so it is important for initiatives like this to spread the message and get more people involved in this kind of activity on a regular basis.
Of course the project's organisers are keen to point out that the best thing you can do with an old, unwanted and yet fully functional bit of electronic equipment, is to pass it on to friends and family.
This will have the lowest carbon footprint and should ensure that the most is made out of your device after you no longer want it.
The recycling route is the next port of call for household electronics, even if they are not currently working.
The organisers of Recycle for Greater Manchester say that it is recommended for residents to take any item to the recycling centre if it has a plug, uses batteries, requires charging or has the logo of a wheelie bin with a cross through it, present on the packaging or product itself.
Council spokesperson, Neil Swannick, said that the average household in Greater Manchester has three electronic gadgets which are either old and unwanted or simply no longer work, which is why the recycling scheme is so important to operate annually, to get people thinking about how to sustainably dispose of these items.
