Government advises consumers to recycle old mobile phones

In the early weeks of the New Year, the government will be encouraging as many people as possible to recycle their unwanted mobile handsets, in a bid to reduce the number of phones that are simply sent to landfill.
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills is behind a brand new initiative, which will attempt to promote the benefits of mobile phone recycling and the proper disposal of all electronic waste, so that people are able to dispose of their used goods in an environmentally friendly manner.
The post-Christmas period is particularly prevalent with people parting ways with old gadgets following a more up to date gift and business minister, Mark Prisk, said that this meant a new project to encourage recycling would be most effective during this time of year.
Mr Prisk pointed out that it is incredibly easy to get rid of outdated electronics and said that the campaign will be targeted on promoting these aspects of the recycling experience.
Of course people who sell their old mobile phones online will be doing their bit to help the environment and will also be able to get themselves a bit of cash in the process.
Popular models, like examples from the Apple iPhone family, can hold their value particularly well, so if you sell you old smartphone you can still get a decent return.
Recycled phones can be reused in a number of ways and some companies will even buy them if they are no longer operational. This is because the internal components are made up of precious materials which can be reused in new handsets.
Some old phones are reconditioned and sold domestically, while others are sent abroad to help people in developing nations stay in touch with one another.
