Government Outlines More Cohesive Plans for Recycling

English councils are set to receive a more consistent set of rules on the kinds of recyclable waste that they should be collecting from kerbsides across the country as part of new government plans which are looking to tackle the fragmentation of this process nationwide.
Standardising the container types and the colours used to distinguish the sorting of specific dry materials for recycling should make things simpler for the authorities as well as for households, as many people struggle to keep up with the varied rules on what can and cannot be left out for collection.
In addition, the aim is to offer a distinct day each week on which food and garden waste will be picked up, with the aim of making this free to all households rather than being charged at a premium - as is the case in some parts of the UK.
The government is in the process of consulting on the issue of recycling in order to assess where key deficiencies in the current approach are and how they might be overcome through a concerted effort that emphasises consistency. Changes to the ways that recycling targets are measured are also on the table.
While there will be a cost associated with the proposed changes, there are plans to provide funding to make up the difference. Councils may even be awarded more funding depending on how closely they adhere to the unified recycling guidelines.
It is not just household waste that will be impacted by the changes but also the waste produced by businesses and public sector organisations.
Changes to regulations on food packaging are expected to have a positive effect on recycling rates and limit the amount of waste sent to landfill, but these changes could be even more effective in making things easier for consumers in England.
