Google Nexus S gets UK launch date this month

Google is stepping up its assault on the mobile market with the launch of the Nexus S smartphone in the UK on the 20th of December and pre-orders for the handset will begin on the 16th. Best Buy and the Carphone Warehouse are reported to be stocking the new mobile.
The Nexus S is the follow-up to the Nexus One, which arrived at the start of the year, although while the original was based on a design from HTC that was eventually re-released as the Desire, this time Google has chosen South Korean manufacturer Samsung to provide the hardware platform that will showcase version 2.3 of Android.
When Google launched the Nexus One, it attempted to take a bold step and sell it online through its own outlets and nowhere else, but poor sales meant that it decided to ditch this technique for the next in the range, which should ensure that the Nexus S becomes a mainstream hit.
On the outside, the Nexus S resembles other handsets in Samsung's Galaxy S line up, although it will be branded with Google's stamp throughout. Onboard a 1GHz processor and 16GB of storage space support a four inch Super AMOLED display, while a five megapixel camera with HD recording abilities is on hand to capture life as it happens.
With Android 2.3 there are several advances, most significant amongst which is the ability to utilise near field communication (NFC) technology for owners to make payments in the real world using their mobile rather than cash or a credit card.
NFC will also be used to allow owners of the Nexus S to collect 'tags' by placing their phones near to certain outlets. Tags can consist of links to websites which can then be accessed from the phone, making it a great promotional tool which advertisers are sure to harness.
